Hobbit-branded beers coming very soon.

The Hobbit is getting its own beer series thanks to a new partnership between Fish Brewing, Ocean Brands, LLC and BevLink, LLC. Though the feature film, The Battle of the Five Armies, doesn’t arrive in theaters until December 17th, you won’t have to wait long for these beers which ship this week. Imperial in nature at nearly 10% ABV each, the trio of beers should be just fine to drink once the film is out. Each beer features one character from Hobbit lore: Gollum (Smeagol), the Dragon Smaug, and the Orc chieftain, Bolg.

Ignoring for a moment that the idea of Orcs brewing something as complex and delicate as a Tripel is dubious at best, this sounds like a great marketing idea, both for selling beers and movie tickets.

Even so, the idea of high-ABV beers representing a children’s novel adapted into a movie primarily targeted at children seems a bit ethically muddy to say the least.

That being said, I will undoubtedly drink at least one of each of these.
